The Thorny Lea Experience

Our club has long been renowned, not only for the quality of the grounds, but also for the caliber of the play by our members.  The Thorny Lea membership has always topped the list of single-digit handicappers at clubs across the state.

The club boasts numerous Massachusetts Amateur champions: Ed (Smiley) Connell, John Tosca (2), Bruce Douglass (2), Steve Tasho (2), and John Hadges (2). Our championship history has continued as Thorny Lea member Matt Parziale captured the 2016 Massachusetts Mid-Amateur, the 2017 Massachusetts Amateur and the 2017 United States Mid-Amateur.  Matt competed in the 2018 Masters Tournament and was the low amateur at the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock Hills.

In September 2018, another Thorny Lea member, Shannon Johnson, won the United States Women's Mid-Amateur at Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis.  With this victory, Shannon earned a spot and competed in the 2019 US Women's Open in Charleston, South Carolina.  Shannon is also a past champion of the 2018 Massachusetts Amateur and the 2018 New England Women's Amateur Championship.

We play on a course where golfing legends Ouimet, Hagen, Sarazen, Nelson and Zaharias have taken a crack at par and come up short.  A quick read of the scorecard does not even begin to tell the story of this wondrous course.
